Kerala, The God’s Own Country is famous for its richness of forests and various waterfalls. The combination of two made Athirappilly quite beautiful and much attractive. One of the finest and largest waterfalls in Kerala, Athirappilly is situated 1000 feet above the sea level which is located at the entrance of Sholayar ranges of Western Ghats. It falls to the Chalakkudy river from a height of 80 feet.
Athirappilly is a forest with wide biodiversity. From there founds four endangered Hornbill species where, it was only founded in this part of Western Ghats. This splendid part of earth is now considering for a hydro electric power project which kill its natural beauty and resources.
Athirappilly is also famous for tourism. This place should be considered as tourists’ paradise spot. Athirappilly along with Vazhachal makes the tourists to achieve a superb experience. Vazhachal is also a waterfall which is a part of the Chalakkudy river.
The thick forest area covered by Chalakkudy river is about an area of 58.5 hectares which has a width up to a distance of 10.5 kilometers below from Peringalkuth. The Vazhachal portion covers an area of 26.4 out of 58.5 hectares.
Athirappilly is calm and wild for the same time. We can enjoy nature’s best picturesque from this gorgeous place. This place is one of the favorite shooting spot of film makers also. Mani Ratnam’s movie ‘Raavan’s’ main location was here.
Athirappilly is easily accessible to reach due to its proximity with a good road network. It takes 105 kilometers from Coimbatore to Valparai through Pollachi. From Valparai you need 46 kilometers to reach Sholayar through Malakkiparai. From there it has 30 kilometers to reach Athirappilly through Peringalkuthu dam and Vazhachal.
People coming from Northern side of Kerala first have to reach Thrissur and then Chalakkudi. From Chalakkudi there is a distance of 33 kilometers to reach Athirappilly.
The tourists from Ernakulam and from Southern Kerala is first to reach Angamaly. Taking a shortcut through the route of ‘Mookkannur, Edalakadu, Ezhattumugham’ will guide the tourists to Athirappilly.
The nearest major railway station is Thrissur (63 kilometer) while a smaller station is in Chalakkudi (35 kilometer). ‘Cochin International Airport’ is situated at a length of 58 kilometers from Thrissur.
